- I went through the following V.34 (28.8k) modems trying to find one which
- worked well with my ISP. Note that *none* ever got a single, useable
- 28.8k connection, so I'm working with non-optimal phone lines -- which is
- probably good from the standpoint of screening modem performance!
-
- (BTW, I have a Mac 6100, so I'm talking only of external modems.)
-
- From best to worst:
-
- 1. SupraFAXModem V.34. Edges out the PPI by a hair. But it's also Flash
- ROM programmable, so some features are updatable. It also has a digital
- readout on the front which allows monitoring of modem speeds, etc. My
- init string is at&f1m1l1w2s11=50+ms=v34,1,24000,28800s95=11. With a few
- other odds and ends, this limits the modem to negotiate between 24k and
- 28.8k (prevents slower connections which I otherwise would sometimes
- get).
-
- 2. Practical Peripherals MC288MT II. Pretty happy with this modem. Could
- usually get in at 26.4k and zmodem of binaries was a steady 3030kbps or
- so. Cheapest of the lot, too. Good value, in my opinion. My init string:
- at&f1l1w2s136=2s108=0s11=55s109=1024s37=34n0s95=47s7=20. Among other
- things, this forces a 26.4k connect because (a) I didn't want lower,
- and (b) 28.8k, as I've said, yields poor results on my lines.
-
- 3. Motorola LifeStyle. Worked as well as the PPI (see #2), but for about
- $42 more. I couldn't justify the extra cost.
-
- 4. Global Village Teleport Platinum. Worked well, but very rarely got in
- at 26.4k. Usually 24k or 21.4k.
-
- 5. USR Sportster V.34+ (33.4k). Would regularly get in at 26.4k and sometimes
- lower. At 26.4k, however, zmodem dowmloads varied in real time between 3000kbps
- and 2000kbps or below. I wanted the V.34+ capability pretty badly, so I spent
- TONS of time trying many assorted init strings on this modem. I never got
- happy with it.
-
- As always, YMMV, but the Supra is the winner as I see it, at least in the
- $190-$230 range.
